So I know we’re slightly past halfway through the year, but I still wanted to participate in the Mid-Year Freak Out Book Tag. This tag is done on YouTube as well as blogs and since I couldn’t decide which one to do, I decided to do both! If you want to see my video on BookTube the video is at the bottom of this blog post. Let’s jump right into the questions!

Best book you’ve read so far this year?

The best book I read so far this year definitely has to go to Release by Lucy Christopher. I discuss my entire review of this book in this blog here. As soon as I read this question I knew without a doubt that this had to go to this book. I loved the first book, Stolen, with my heart and soul and knew that the second book would knock it out of the park for me as well. Lucy Christopher just has a way of writing such interesting, well-developed characters and in a way I never know what they’re going to do next!

Best sequel you’ve read so far this year?

Since I didn’t want to repeat myself over and over by choosing Release I decided to go with another best sequel I read this year. Although if I could have, I would’ve chosen Release for this answer as well!

Instead I chose, Before Your Memory Fades and Before We Say Goodbye by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. This is the third and fourth book in the series titled, Before the Coffee Gets Cold, and they were just as good as the first books were for me. This author has a way of writing such cozy stories that all interconnect with each other. I love the atmosphere created in this series and it’s become one of my all time favorites! I talk about both of these books in these blogs here and here.

New Release you haven’t read yet but you want to?

This had to go to Five Broken Blades by Mai Corland. I’ve seen so much hype around this book that was just released. I wasn’t even sure what it was about until I looked it up to write this blog. However, I was still prepared to read it because of how much it’s being pushed that I thought to myself, this has gotta be good.

Most anticipated release for the second half of the year?

I’m unbelievably excited for this release coming out later this year. It is Somewhere Beyond the Sea by TJ Klune. Somewhere Beyond the Sea is the sequel to Klune’s The House in the Cerulean Sea. I absolutely adored this book and TJ Klune easily became one of my favorite authors. He writes such cozy, heartwarming stories where you fall in love with every single character. I would have to say that Under the Whispering Door has to be my favorite of his, but House in the Cerulean Sea is a close second. So you can only imagine how excited I am for the sequel to be released so soon!

Biggest disappointment?

I hate that this was my choice this year but this had to go to House of Flame and Shadow by Sarah J Maas. This is the third book in the Crescent City series. I will start by saying that while this book was the biggest disappointment, I still enjoyed the book. Because this was so hyped by all of us in the fandom it just fell flat. I personally, was expecting much more and it just unfortunately did not live up to my expectations.

Biggest surprise?

What Moves the Dead by T Kingfisher has to be the biggest surprise for me this year! I purchased this book at a Barnes and Noble (at a midnight release for another book) at the Starbucks counter. They had it on sale when you purchased a coffee so I thought why not? I’m so glad I did! This little horror novel was the spooky vibes I needed to get me through this summer and prepare for fall. It’s based upon Edgar Allen Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher and was eerie enough to keep me up at night! Check out my review of it here!

New favorite author?

I couldn’t believe it took me so long to read their stuff but Katee Robert and Emily McIntire have jumped up on my list of favorite authors. They both write dark fantasy romances that are so delectable.

Katee Roberts wrote the Dark Olympus series, the first one being about Hades and Persephone. They are modern retellings of the Greek Gods love stories and I fly through them so fast everytime I pick one up. Emily McIntire writes dark romance as well but does retellings of the Disney villains. Hooked is her first one and it’s about Captain Hook having a tumultuous affair with Peter Pan’s daughter. Her series is also addicting and I’m so glad I discovered them both this year!

Newest fictional crush?

ALright, I’ve had a few of these so it was hard to narrow down. But I’ve gotta give this to James aka Captain Hook from Hooked by Emily McIntire. James is so dreamy and broody all at the same time. Even though he’s in the drug business and murders people, I could fix him, right?

Book that made you cry?

There’s not many books I’ve read so far this year that have made me cry. There really aren’t a whole lot of them in general that have made me cry. So this one had to be a repeat (please forgive me). For this answer I chose Stolen and Release by Lucy Christopher. Stolen was a reread for me but it gets me everytime. Release was right behind it and I just couldn’t stop all the tears in this one either!

Book that made you happy?

I know this one is a repeat as well but I had to give this to Before Your Memory Fades and Before We Say Goodbye by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. No matter which one in this series I read, they always make my heart so happy and feel so comforted.

Most beautiful book you’ve bought this year?

So for this one, I have bought a beautiful collectors edition of a series. BUT. It hasn’t arrived just yet. This was an edition I was so excited to find and was willing to spend on it as it’s my favorite series of all time. It’s the complete Throne of Glass collection, beautifully put together with painted edges and gorgeous covers. These originally sold out so quickly so when they went back on sale I jumped on it! Even though it won’t arrive until October I’m so excited to receive it!

What books do you need to read by the end of this year?

Some of these books have been on my list for a while! But here are a few that I would love to finish by the end of this year!

A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle Jenson

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

The Invisible Life of Addie Larue by V.E. Schwab

Well, there you have it! My Mid Year Freak Out tag is all done (even though we’re a little more than halfway through the year at this point). I hope you enjoyed this blog and if you’ve done this yourself on your blog or YouTube page I would love to know! Make sure to let me know down in the comments and I’ll check it out! If you’d also like to see my YouTube video of this tag I’ve linked it down below!
