Open book under a slanting of light next to a glass of iced coffee

August turned out to be a bit of a slump for me. There was so much going on and moving parts that it was hard to sit down and read. But even when I did have time I often felt that I didn’t want to pick up a book. All of that is okay though because I’m picking back up the torch in September! So without further ado, here is my August Reading Wrap Up!

Get Clients Now! by CJ Hayden

I started the month of August with this marketing book and the challenge they present. It’s a 28 day challenge that pushes you out of your comfort zone. It teaches you how to find unique and creative ways to market yourself or your business.

I picked this up because I’m a freelance editor and I love helping authors develop and polish their stories. However, sometimes I find it difficult to find authors that need my help. Crazy, I know! There’s so many authors out there that need my service but sometimes it’s hard to find them or have them find you because there’s so much noise out there. This book really helped me in finding new ways to market my services. I will be completely honest in that I didn’t end up finishing the challenge. August was a pretty busy month for us and we actually went on (a much needed) vacation for a little over a week with my family.

I’d love to give this challenge another try though because I was loving what it was having us do. It was definitely pushing me out of my comfort zone!

Read Books All Day and Get Paid For It by Jennie Nash

I recently started following Jennie Nash after I found out what a Book Coach is and realizing that’s exactly what I want to be doing! Helping people write their books from beginning to end and even helping them find agents literally sounds like the dream. Jennie Nash is a Book Coach herself and has started a school for people to become Certified Book Coaches and it’s something I’ve had my eye on for a while now. Unfortunately, I can’t afford it just yet so I’ve been gobbling up every book she’s written on this subject as well as writing in general!

This book really did give a great insight into what a Book Coach does. It’s great even if you don’t want to become a Book Coach but are a writer looking to find out what they do and how to work with one! I highly recommend giving this a read to further your understanding of this profession and plus it’s a quick read!

Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Maas

This is the last book in the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas and the final book for me to finish off my annual reread. Everything comes to a head in this book and we finally get to see all of our favorite characters back together! Unfortunately, it’s not under great circumstances but I’ll take it.

If you’ve read my other blogs on these books you’ll know how much I love this series and how I will never NOT recommend it to other people. It’s filled with amazing characters, a unique world, and epic adventure. Plus, having a kick ass woman protagonist always helps.

Be sure to read this blog post to find out what this series is about!

Blueprint for a Book by Jennie Nash

Another book by Jennie Nash? Absolutely! Listen, this lady right here has a lot of expertise and great advice! So of course, I had to pick up her book about structuring a novel. Even if you’re not a planner when it comes to writing, this book is extremely handy in laying out the foundation of your story.

Jennie takes us through laying out the structure of a novel. She has a writer refer back to this handy blueprint as they write and develop their story. It helps to keep you on track and see an overall outline of your story from beginning to end. Trust me, this process helps tremendously! It’s already helping me with my current book I’m working on. I’m seeing the holes I have but it’s helping me to figure out what the exact problem is and I’m finding unique ways to fix it by using her system!

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

Book cover with the title A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

Lastly, I read a fun book this month. It can’t all be work! This book was gifted to me by my amazing husband. He saw it in the bookstore and picked it up for me because he thought I’d enjoy it, and I did!

I only found out later that this book is actually a classic! Why my English teachers decided not to assign this in high school I’ll never know. But boy did I wish they had!

This book is about a young girl, Francie, growing up in the early 20th century in Brooklyn and outside her house is the only tree that grows in the city. It’s a coming of age novel about this young girl, and her family is struggling to make ends meet. She longs to be a writer one day and dreams of seeing her writing be published. We see her grow up from about five or six years old until she turns about seventeen. It’s a well written story and dives into the topics of poverty , family, and following your dreams and I absolutely loved it.

Here is a compiled list of all the books I read this month!

This is everything I read in the month of August! Check out my YouTube video below if you want to see me talk even more passionately about these books (and to also peep the cat and dog!)
